A congenital defect of the spine in which part of the spinal cord and its meninges are exposed through a gap in the backbone. It often causes paralysis of the lower limbs, and sometimes mental handicap.
Most of the children treated to-date as well as those that are cued up for care have a form of spina bifida called Myelomeningocele which is also referred to as Spina Bifida Cystica. It is in-a-word the most severe form of spina bifida which is the result of parts of the spinal cord and nerves protruding though an opening in the spine during a baby's gestation (Development in the womb).
